Peta Preston Image Stylist.  It rolls off the tongue quite nicely, don’t you think?  I must confess, I travelled the country to find a Mr Preston to wed!  ‘Simon’ was my maiden name.  Doesn’t quite have the same impact, does it?  This is how serious I am about personal image and the importance of ensuring the image we project to the world is aligned with how we want our brand to be perceived.  I’m joking about the whole searching the continent for a husband with the right surname, but you have to admit – I had you wondering, right?

It takes approximately 3.5 seconds for someone to form an opinion of you when they meet you for the first time.  Only 7% is words, 38% voice tone and a colossal 55% is visual!

If we can influence the way people perceive us through our style, we have the power to convey the right message to our audience.  Fashion styling is more than choosing great clothes and keeping up with trends.  My unique perspective on styling focuses on the inside, to convey the right message on the outside.  When you own your own business, you are your brand.  It isn’t about re-creating yourself through style, it’s about refining your own unique and beautiful style, revealing your own best version.

A vast majority of my clients are young Mums who are re-entering the workforce, or women in business who are unsure how to dress because they feel they have lost their sense of style.  The once very conservative work wardrobe that consisted of tailored suits, boring court heels and your best pearl studs, has broadened, allowing women to cleverly incorporate their own personal touches into their 9 to 5 style.  Define your own personal style ladies and build your work wardrobe around it.

  • Invest in good quality statement pieces like a timeless well-cut blazer that can be worn over any pant, skirt or dress.  This same blazer also works over jeans for a casual chic weekend look
  • Opt for a pair of coloured pants, such as maroon or an asymmetrical style skirt to knock your styling up a notch.  Teamed with a simple blouse and blazer, this bold, stylish look will help you ooze confidence
  • Mixing the masculine structure of a blazer with the feminine flow and texture of a satin or silk blouse is a divine combination and bound to make you feel like you can conquer the world.  You can even opt for a pattern or floral print blouse or keep on-trend with the latest season colours
  • Bright statement heels can add an instant lift to any outfit!  The right heel has the ability to raise both your style and your confidence to the next level.  “A woman carries her clothes, but it’s a shoe that carries a woman” – Christian Louboutin

An important question to ask yourself when dressing for success:  What does your outfit say about you?  Our clothes speak before we do.  Ensure your outfit reflects the image you want to project.  First impressions are everything.  It takes an instant before one is formed so use this to your advantage.

It’s no secret that assembling an outfit is like selecting social armour.  Your outfit will alter how you approach and interact with the world.  When you look good, you feel good.  Confidence is the best accessory you will ever wear.

No one else is you, and that is your power.  Own it ladies!

Yours in style x
